Meet Deshan

Deshan is 12 years old and lives with his family in Rohanapura village in Thanamalwila. He has an 11 year old sister and they are both currently studying at Mo/sevanagala Usbim Maha Vidyalaya. His mother works as a labourer. Sadly, his father passed away 6 months ago from a kidney disease, making Deshan’s mother the sole provider. His mother’s income is not enough to cover both Deshan’s and his sister’s educational needs on top of their living expenses due to her unsteady income.

Chamara & Sandya

Meet Chamara & Sandya

Chamara Prasanna is 6 years old and lives with his mother and two siblings in Polwattewela, Badula. Chamara’s mother is a single mother and has no permanent job to provide for her children. She has been working as a labourer and farmer and must leave her children with her sick mother to find work in order to bring food home. Chamara’s older sister, Sandya Saroga Shamali is deaf and mute and in 2019 social services built them a small house to live in. Sandya is in Grade 11 and attends a Special School in Bandarawella.

In 2020, Chamara only attended 3 months of pre-school as his mother could not afford to pay the ongoing tuition fees. Chamara is starting Grade 1 this year but his mother has no money to buy him or his siblings essential school supplies, including shoes, a water bottle or books, in order for them to attend school.

S.P. Rukshan Induwara

Meet Rukshan

Rukshan is 5 years old and lives with his family in a rural area called Andaluwa, Kolambage-ara. Rukshan is from a very poor family who are currently living in a rental house. Rukshan is one of three children and has an older brother and sister who are currently in school. His father is a hired driver and his mother is a housewife. Rukshan is expecting to start school in 2021. His father is struggling to make ends meet as his salary is not enough to cover all his children’s expenses.

S.A. Kalana Anuhas Nimnada

Meet Kalana

Kalana is 8 years old and lives with his parents in Karambagalmulla, Ambantota. He is currently in Grade 3 attending Karambagalmulla Junior School. Kalana was diagnosed with a Congenital Neurological Disorder in 2016. He suffers from epilepsy and his family has been advised that he may suffer from long term memory loss. Kalana has been receiving medical treatment for the past four years. His father has been struggling to afford Kalana’s ongoing medical treatment as he is a farmer and the only one working in the family.

A.G.G. Nirwan Anjana Gamage

Meet Nirwan

Nirwan is 12 years old and lives with his mother and two older brothers in a remote area called Kiriellawatte in Sri Lanka. Nirwan currently attends Sumana Central College in Niwitigala. His father left the family when Nirwan was just a little boy, prompting his mother to take on a job as a laborer in a tea factory. Although his mother works endless hours, her wage is not enough to cover all of her children’s expenses. Nirwan’s brothers are both pursuing their higher education; one is completing his studies at a government university. Nirwan is the youngest in the family and requires more resources than his mother can afford him to help aid him in his learning.

G. Tharuma Samangi

Meet Tharuma

Tharuma is 13 years old and lives with her family in a remote area called Paragastota in Sri Lanka. She lives with her older brother, father and mother and is the youngest in the family. Tharuma is currently in Grade 8 and attending Diyagama Central College in Kaluthara. Tharuma is a studious student and in the past two years, ranked number one in her class. Her father works as a driver and the entire family depends on his salary for all their expenses. Tharuma’s mother is a housewife and despite their financial hardship, her brother is pursuing his higher studies. While her father earns enough to support her family’s basic needs, Tharuma lacks the support she needs to achieve her best in her studies, unfortunately limiting her potential.

M.A Risindu Wibodha

Meet Risindu

Risindu is 15 years old and lives with his family in a remote area called Sildelwatte in Sri Lanka. He lives with his older sister, father and mother and is the youngest in the family. Risindu is currently in Grade 10 and attending MR/Thalalla North Dharmawijaya Central College. His father works as a hired driver and the entire family depends on his salary for all their expenses. Risindu’s mother is a housewife and despite their financial hardship, his sister is hoping to pursue her higher studies. With his father’s small salary being spent on their ongoing household needs and his older sister’s higher education, it doesn’t leave much for Risindu.

D.R.G. Kashmeera Dilshan

Meet Kashmeera

Kashmeera is 14 years old and lives with his family in a remote area called Baminiyanwila in Sri Lanka. He is the youngest of three children and has two older sisters who are pursuing their higher education. He is currently in Grade 9 and attending Ambalantota Central College. Kashmeera’s father is a farmer and the family depends on his small salary for all their expenses. His mother is a housewife and while one of his sisters is attending a government university, the other is trying to pursue her higher studies. Kashmeera’s father’s earnings are spent on the family’s basic necessities and his sister’s higher education, leaving very little finances to provide Kashmeera with ongoing support for his schooling.
